dissection axillary lymph node count in patient with breast cancer followed by neoadjuvant therapy
Authors
abstract
introduction: breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second cause of death in women. it is essential to have the highest level of confidence in axillary staging assessment. many surgeons and pathologists believe that fewer lymph nodes are present in axillary dissection specimens of women treated by neoadjuvant chemotherapy. consequently, the purpose of this study was to compare the lymph node counts of axillary dissection specimens from patients having received neoadjuvant chemotherapy with those of patients treated with primary operation. methods: this descriptive study was conducted on 100 women with invasive breast cancer who underwent level i and ii axillary lymph node dissections from 2012 through 2013 in quaem hospital surgery department . these patients dichotomized into two categories: women from the neoadjuvant chemotherapy group (n=50) were compared with those from the primary surgery group (n=50). the total number of lymph nodes harvested was compared ,the obtained data was analyzed by spss software (v: 16), using kruskal-wallis and mann-whitney at the significant level p<0/05. results: range of age in neoadjuvant and surgery group respectively was 23–68 and 26–89 years. the median number of lymph nodes retrieved in the neoadjuvant chemotherapy group was 14.0 (range 5 to 25) compared with 16 (range 5 to 32) in surgery-first group, although there was not statistically significant difference between the two groups (p=0.122). tumor stage and nodal stage were significantly higher in the neoadjuvant group (p≤0.001). conclusions: this study suggests that administration of neoadjuvant chemotherapy to breast cancer patient's results in a reduced number of lymph nodes retrieved in the axillary dissection specimens.

full textthe accuracy of sentinel lymph node biopsy compared with axillary lymph node dissection in breast cancer
background : sentinel lymph node biopsy is used as an accurate staging procedure to detect early breast cancer. several studies have documented that sentinel lymph node biopsy can accurately determine the status of axillary nodes. sentinel node biopsy offers the advantage of accurately staging the axilla and eliminating the need for a full axillary dissection for patients who have a negative se...

Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the dose distribution and coverage of level Ⅰ-Ⅱ axillary lymph nodes during whole breast tangential field radiotherapy (RT) after breast-conserving surgery in patients with breast cancer. Materials and Methods: The level Ⅰ-Ⅱ axillary lymph node volumes were retrospectively contoured by a single radiation oncologist based on computed tomography...
full textPrediction Axillary Lymph Node Involvement Status on Breast Cancer Data
Introduction: one of the foremost usual methods for evaluating breast cancer is the removal of axillary lymph nodes (ALN) which include complications such as edema, limited hand movements, and lymph accumulation. Although studies have shown that the sentinel gland condition represents the axillary nodules context in the mammary gland, the efficacy, and safety of the guard node biopsy need to be...
full textAxillary lymph node dissection for breast cancer utilizing Harmonic Focus®
BACKGROUND For patients with axillary lymph node metastases from breast cancer, performance of a complete axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) is the standard approach. Due to the rich lymphatic network in the axilla, it is necessary to carefully dissect and identify all lymphatic channels. Traditionally, these lymphatics are sealed with titanium clips or individually sutured. Recently, the Ha...

Background: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed and the leading cause of cancer death among females worldwide. The rate of breast cancer incidence among Iranian women is 17% of all cancers, it has been ranked first in Iran. This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting axillary lymph node involvement in female patients with breast cancer. Methods: A cross-sectional study was c...
